Why Newfoundlanders are Making the Switch to Heat Pumps

Over the years, different types of heating systems have evolved. As heating and cooling technology improves, hvac systems become more efficient. Heat pumps have begun to rise in popularity across Canada, especially right here in Newfoundland

First of all. Let’s answer the question we are often asked!

What is a residential heat pump? I’ve seen them described as essentially an air conditioner that is slightly modified so that it can run in two directions, cooling the home in the summer and providing heat in the winter. Is that correct?

The Newfoundland and Labrador government have recognized the energy savings associated with installing Heat Pump and Mini-Splits.

Take Charge NL is a government program that provides rebates to people who are taking steps to become more energy efficient. This includes increasing your homes insulation, installing LED light-bulbs, programmable thermostats, HRV systems and much more.

Rebates will be issued to qualified homeowners in Newfoundland and Labrador for a new eligible electric heat source that is installed between April 1, 2022 and March 15, 2023.

Rebates and Programs available to Newfoundlanders:

1) OIL TO ELECTRIC REBATE PROGRAM

With the Oil to Electric Rebate Program, qualified homeowners can receive a rebate of up to $5,000 to help transition their homes from oil to electricity-based heat. If you are considering switching to a heat pump, eligible applicants can receive up to an additional $5,000 with current federal incentives through the Canada Greener Homes Initiative.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the majority of our electricity comes from clean, renewable sources. By making the switch to an electric heat source, homeowners can take advantage of these savings while also supporting a greener future for our province.

2) The Home Energy Savings Program (HESP) Electric Heat (and sources other than oil)

HESP is a provincial initiative designed to assist households with low income in making energy efficient retrofits to their homes. The program assists clients with retrofits that will make their homes more affordable and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Save on Purchase and Installation Costs

Any HVAC system is an investment. However, price is still a factor that comes to play for most when making a decision. Opting for a heat pump means qualifying for government rebates. The Canada Greener Homes Grant is a federal government program that aims to help Canadians make their homes more energy efficient. You can qualify for up to $10,000 in grants when purchasing an eligible heat pump, savings that aren’t offered with most competing heat sources.

In-House Financing

Cole Air Contracting provides Newfoundlanders with In-House financing options. When you consider the rebates that are available, matched with the long term savings associated with a more energy efficient home and financing options…. It’s no surprise why people are making the switch.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Heat pumps are one the most environmentally friendly heat sources homeowners can choose from. Deploying residential heat pumps more widely across the province has the potential to help reduce carbon pollution while also saving homeowners money.

Most homes in North America are heated by natural gas, propane or oil. This type of heating emits greenhouse gases.

The main reason why heat-pumps are not more popular, is the perceived higher cost of installing heat pumps. I say perceived because in many parts of the country, heat pumps would more than pay for themselves over their lifetimes. Also, if a homeowner needed to replace a furnace and an air conditioner, installing a heat pump—which can heat and cool—might be the cheapest option. With the new rebates available from the Newfoundland Government, matched with Cole Air Contracting financing options, we are seeing increased adoption….which is great for everyone!
